From Wiveliscombe Messenger 2008

We have enjoyed a hugely successful first year at Barbecue Lodges, selling our unique Scandinavian cooking lodges at shows all over the West Country.  Sue Tout says “it is much more fun than egg farming.  We have met some lovely people and seen some amazing gardens when installing the lodges, in places as varied as a woodland, over a lake and in a quarry.  We have erected our smallest model, the Hare, in a tiny garden in Cornwall, and installed one of the largest, the Reindeer on a shoot in Sussex.  One was sold to a white witch who is using her lodge for meditation and tarot card reading!”

Sue and Graham have won awards for the Best Show Exhibit at many of the shows they have attended, and at the Axminster show won first prize and a cup.

From Limited Edition - Spring 2008

Think Hansel and Gretel at the witch’s house, think Hobbit homes with smoke curling from the chimney, think walking lodges in the Arctic Tundra - and you start to get an inkling of what barbecue lodges are all about.

Beautifully made wooden structures with high sloping roofs their most fascinating feature for unaccustomed English eyes is the open fireplace in the centre, designed for all year round barbecuing as well as warmth.

They’re traditional buildings called ‘Kota’ that have been used in Scandinavia and Lapland for years, as lodges all over the Tundra for walkers and reindeer herders but are now being used as an unusual extra room in the garden, as a party venue or a quiet retreat.

The wooden walls, floor and ceiling are all made from pale Arctic Pine and the small, decorative windows are double glazed while the round fireplace and chimney in the centre have adjustable grills to enable a variety of different foods to be cooked easily.

These authentic Finnish lodges are causing a stir in the West country and beyond and come in three sizes seating either up to 10 or up to 30 guests they are deceptively spacious because of their unique sloping sides.

A built-in bench all around the inside is covered in loose reindeer skins, and used to sit or sleep on, while wooden ledges around the barbecue serve as food warmer and table tops.

Home expansion – quality with style

A unique concept that offers extra room for occasions as diverse as sophisticated entertaining and teenage sleepovers has been brought to Somerset.

Barbecue lodges have been used by reindeer herders for hundreds of years as a refuge from the arctic weather.  They are great fun, and a highly unusual addition to the grounds of any property.  More practical than a summerhouse, being ideal for use in all seasons, and more stylish than a conservatory, a barbecue lodge is perfect for those who need a little more space, perhaps to accommodate children’s friends or grandchildren for occasional visits.

Sometimes called Kota, the lodges come in various sizes, but can seat from 10 to 30 people, and comfortably sleep three on benches (more on the floor in the larger models).  The central barbecue can be used for cooking or just for heat. Guests can enjoy a real ‘camp fire’ atmosphere without the discomfort of sitting on the ground – the wooden benches are covered in amazingly comfortable warm reindeer skins, a reminder of their robust Finnish manufacture. .

Constructed from slow-growing, high quality Arctic timber, the lodges are of exceptional quality and will last more than 20 years with minimal maintenance. The attractive design and timber construction makes them a piece of Scandinavia that fits perfectly into the Somerset landscape.

Somerset-born Graham Tout has been farming on the edge of Exmoor all his life, but has recently given up his free-range egg business to set up Barbecue Lodges.  He and his wife Sue are delighted with the lodge that they have on their Somerset farm which offers the only place in the country where you can visit a fully-operational lodge, with the barbecue lit, to enjoy a drink and sample some freshly barbecued food.
