The terms BBQ cabins, BBQ lodges and BBQ huts can all be used interchangeably but their history remains the same. Originally and still today, BBQ huts are known as “grillkota,” which is a word literally translated from the Finnish word for “grill house.” Today’s modern BBQ huts are based on the traditional living quarters of the indigenous Sami people of Northern Lapland that look similar to a teepee. The Sami people are the only indigenous community in the European Union area and are descendants of the nomadic people who inhabited northern Scandinavia for thousands of years.
Reindeer herding heritage
Reindeer herding has been the basis of the Sami economy since the earliest of times. The Sami people also hunted the reindeer and other wildlife in the area to sustain life in the community. To cook the reindeer and other gathered food items, the Sami people gathered around the barbecue fire in the middle of their hut, enjoying each other’s presence while thanking the animal and earth for their meal.
Today, the modern BBQ hut is used in a very similar fashion – to act as a gathering place for family and friends to enjoy a meal and the company of each other. They can be added to your property to create a fun and functional outdoor garden room or used in educational and entertainment settings for schools or communities. BBQ huts are incredibly versatile and can be used for a wide range of applications.
